President Woodrow Wilson originally established what we now call Veterans Day as Armistice Day in 1919 to commemorate the armistice that halted fighting in World War One. In 1954 the name was officially changed to Veterans Day. The date we celebrate Veterans Day on has changed a couple of times since then, but in 1978 it was changed back to November 11th and has remained so since. This day is a chance for all Americans to come together and recognize the sacrifice and service that our veterans have made in ensuring freedom and liberty continue to flourish both here in the U.S. and abroad.
